In 40 years of clear race days, the IRONMAN World Championship has never cancelled due to weather emergencies. However, this year the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sent a flash flood and thunderstorm warning for Oct 12 – Oct 14th, covering the day of competition. Kailua – Kona experienced flash floods on this very same race route in September 2015. That kind of storm could easily disrupt the race and local festivities. But Hawaii weather is notoriously unpredictable. Earlier this year Hurricane Lane was predicted to strike Kailua Kona, but ended as a mild rainstorm for West Hawaii. Tomorrow will reveal whether thunderstorms will hit the 40th IRONMAN Championship or not.
